The purpose of the Medical Immersion Summer Academy (MISA) program is to expose Pre-medical and Pre-health high school students to a hands-on experience in a variety of health care settings that will provide them with a competitive edge.

Medical Immersion Summer Academy partners with local health programs such as: the Alameda County Medical Center, Samuel Merritt University, UCSF-School of Medicine and private clinicians in the area, to bring this valuable experience to Bay Area high school students.

Jocelyn Freeman Garrick, MD, MS
Founder and Executive Director

Jocelyn Freeman Garrick, MD MS attended medical school at the University of Southern California and trained in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Jacobi/Montefiore Emergency Medicine Residency Program in New York, serving as chief resident during her final year in 2001. She is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician who, after completing her residency, obtained a Masters in Science in Epidemiology from Cornell University.
Dr. Freeman Garrick is currently an attending physician at Alameda County Medical Center- Highland Hospital in Oakland, California. In that role, she is the EMS Base and Emergency Preparedness Director.

Owen Garrick, MD, MBA
Chief Operating Officer

Owen Garrick, MD, MBA earned his MD from the Yale School of Medicine and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of Bridge Clinical Research. Prior to Bridge Clinical Research, Dr. Garrick was the Director of Corporate Strategy and Business Development at McKesson Corporation. Prior to McKesson, Dr. Garrick served as Global Head of M&A Negotiations at Novartis Pharmaceuticals. He serves on numerous boards, including the Advisory Board of Science and Technology LLC. Dr. Garrick was recently elected as President of American Medical Association Foundation.

Nelly Gonzalez
Program Manager

Ms. Nelly Gonzalez attended the University of California – Berkeley and double majored in Molecular/Cell Biology and Cognitive Science. She has worked with health organizations for over seven years in a variety of different roles and arenas, including research, policy, workforce development, public health, program development and management. She serves on a variety of higher education advising committees and has extensive experience advising and working with youth.
